Photo taken in Alexandria, MN.
We estimate the son to be about 16 years of age.
This means the photo would have been taken in 1917
assuming Henry was born one year after the marriage date of 1900.
You will note that "Stephen" is wearing a
ribbon banner around
his
left shoulder and right waist.
Obviously, it was a day of
celebration
in that area. We are not aware of what event.

Florice
M. "Myron" Blackwell, son of Stephen and Hilma (Brandon) Blackwell, was born
on
January 13, 1909 in Holmes City. In 1925 the family moved to Sodaville,
Oregon, where he
graduated from high school in 1928. He attended the
University of Oregon in Pre-Med and
received his BA degree in 1932, and his
master’s in counseling and guidance from
Arizona State University.
On March 27, 1931, Myron was united in marriage to Arvilla Davis in Oregon. Following their marriage he taught math and science at schools in Oregon, Washington, Montana, Minnesota and Arizona, and he had an avid interest in these fields up to his death. In between his 32 years of teaching, Myron farmed in Oregon and Minnesota with diversified crops and livestock. Following Arvilla’s death on October 22, 1985, Myron was united in marriage to Eunice Estes in Arizona on December 7, 1986. Eunice died on September 8, 1994.
He had a great interest and love of music and taught band and directed choirs in many churches and schools. The "Hallelujah Chorus" was his specialty. During his retirement in Mesa, Arizona, he organized and conducted a symphony of retired musicians. Their popularity soon spread and they held many concerts throughout the retirement parks. He moved to Mt. Lake in March of 1995 and was currently a member of the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church. Myron collected volumes of cassettes, magazines and books connected to his interests.
Myron died on Saturday evening, February 3, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Village in Mt. Lake at the age of 92 years and 21 days. Myron is survived by a daughter-in-law, Marjorie Blackwell Friesen and her husband Willard of Mt. Lake; a step-daughter, Shirley Jennings and her husband Jerry of Oregon; a step-son, Ed Newton and is wife Marlene of California; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; eleven step-great-grandchildren; five step great great grandchildren; two brothers, Henry and Burton Blackwell and his wife Auby, all of Oregon; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Gladys
Winnifred Blackwell, 87, died in her sleep June 1
____. She had been living in an adult foster
home in Bend, Oregon, with
her husband, Henry. A memorial service was held June 9 in First Baptist Church
of Bend.
Mrs. Blackwell was born June 14, 1907, in Salem, Oregon to Wallace and Nellie
Skeels. At age 4, she moved
with her family by wagon to Lebanon. She married
Henry Brandon Blackwell of Sodaville, Oregon, in 1933 and
the couple moved to
Bend in 1940. They moved to Sodaville in 1969 and returned to Bend in 1977.
During World War II, Mrs. Blackwell delivered parcel post in Bend by bicycle.
She was one of the early graduates
of the Central Oregon Community College
licensed professional nursing program. She worked as a nurse at
St. Charles
Hospital in the 1960’s.
Throughout her life she had been an active member of the Grange, First Baptist
Church of Bend and
Sodaville Church. Her interests included music, needlepoint
and cooking.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Blackwell is survived by a daughter,
LeAnn Dean
of Redmond, Washington;
two sons, Dale Blackwell of Aurora, Oregon and Terry
Blackwell of Bend; 13 grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by a sister, Gracie Coyle of
Lebanon.
Information provided by Terry
Blackwell
Some of the history as it has been told to me is that in the late 1800s the
lumber mills in Minnesota
were running out of wood. Oregon was just being
discovered as a viable wood production area so a lot
of the loggers and mill
people from Minnesota started transferring to Oregon at about that time.
Our area of Bend, Oregon was established then with the start of two large sawmills.
One was Brooks-Scanlin
and the other was Shevlin Hixon. These men were all
formerly Minnesota mill owners. Stephen (10.2.5.6)
was a steam engineer
and I think he worked around the country to some extent. He spent some
time in
Colorado on a steam shovel or something of that nature. He came to
the Lebanon area and found work,
and then went back for the family when my
father was about 18. Sherwin and Burton worked as loggers.
Dad
carried mail on horseback part of the time because of the mud, and he also
started a small dairy, raised
pigs, etc. etc. After he and my mother got
married, they moved to Bend where he worked as a county mechanic,
and a fireman
for the City of Bend. He then became a postman which he retired from after
more then twenty years.
They then moved to Sodaville, outside of Lebanon. I have fond memories of
visiting Uncle Myron's (10.2.5.6.3)
farm in Powell Butte as a kid. There
were big Sunday dinners and we would explore around the farm catching
bull
frogs, and anything else of interest. There was always lots of laughter
and music. Dad and Myron were close
and maintained such a relationship
throughout their lives. I also remember a trip to the farm in Minnesota
where
Blackwell Lake is. Uncle Myron taught me to drive a tractor. It had a small platform on the back and I could
take
a small aluminum boat down to the lake with the tractor. I also had
to use it to pick up broken hay bails.
I remember that it was the 4th of July because we
bought fireworks and set them off. The year had to be about 1959.
My
Mother had to stay home but we brought Lorayne with us (Dad and Myron's only
sister). I had a pellet gun and
shot a pigeon off the rafter of the barn
and Myron wanted me to learn not to kill something without a reason, so he
taught me to clean and pluck it and had Arvilla cook it for me for dinner.

He attended school in Washington and Oregon and graduated in 1959 from

Mountain Lake, Minnesota since 1980, where Robert was
presently working at

serving
on the Alexandria Vo-Tech advisory Board and a member of the Mountain Lake

Robert died on Thursday, December 24, 1992, at Deaconess Medical Center in
Billings, Montana. He
