John and Emma are buried in VanLoon Cemetery.

Mary Janette Blackwell 10.2.5.1 married Frank B. Mackenzie and had 7 children. Upon giving birth to their last child, Mary Jane on Christmas Day of 1900, Mary Janette died. It was reported that the child died also. However, that was not the case. It was learned that the baby did survive the birth. It has long been questioned as to what became of the child. Important Information
It was Mary Janette (10.2.5.1) that died during child birth on Dec 25 1900.
It was reported that her child also died. However, the family reports that the daughter, named Mary Jane (10.2.5.1.7) was actually taken and adopted by Frank Morse. ( She was raised by her father's sister and renamed Marie Morse ) She later married Sidney Oliver. Her photo is below at age 10 (see Photos 61 - 64 - 65)

More Information on the Child of Mary Jeanette Blackwell
Mary Janette Mackenzie - Blackwell died on December 25, 1900 during childbirth. The child, named Mary Jane Blackwell was taken to the home of William Minor Blackwell because his wife, Wilhelmina, had recently gave birth and was able to care for the immediate needs of the child. About a week later, Ruth Mackenzie Morse (sister to John H. Mackenzie) came and took the child home to live with her and her husband, Frank Morse and was adopted by the couple. They resided in Alexandria, South Dakota. The child grew up as Marie Morse. Marie Morse eventually met and married Sidney Oliver. View

Kathryn Johnson, a resident of Minnesota and a provider of information to this website, has found newspaper clippings explaining why there was such confusion over the apparent death of Mary Janette and her daughter.
"We had a newspaper account of the death of Mary Janette on Dec. 25, 1900. That report said her death was followed by her newborn baby. I recently located the following newspaper account from the Alexandria Citizen of Jan. 10, 1901.- Page 8, Col. 4: It states - """We were wrongly informed in regard to McKenzie's newborn baby and told that it died at the same time as its mother. The baby is still living and doing well.""".

Kathryn Johnson has also been able to find confirmation to confirm the birth rite of Frank Mackenzie. It had been reported that Franklin was the son of William L. Mackenzie. Another account stated he was the son of John McKenzie. Kathryn has found a report in the Alexandria Post of Jan. 24, 1901 an item that was in turn, from the Hutchinson, Minnesota Newspaper which stated that the wife of Franklin McKenzie (Mary Janette) had died. It also states that the McKenzie's came to Hutchinson in 1856 and from there came to Holmes City. It says Franklin was the son of John H. McKenzie and a nephew of William L MacKenzie and Susie Mackenzie. (See Photo 103 below of John H. Mackenzie)

Indian Uprising
The Indian Uprising in Minnesota that involved our family, ended with 486 white settlers being killed. (Other reports state higher numbers) On December 26 - 1862, 38 Indians were hung at Mankato, Minnesota. It all started over the Indians not receiving the money promised them for the land they sold to the Government. It is reported that during the time, local writers supported the claim of the Indians against the Government.   See Below

With the passing of Frank B. Mackenzie of Gwinner at the Britton hospital on Sunday, Aug. 13. 1939. the last chapter in the eventful career of North Dakota's oldest living settler came to a close. A recent survey by the state historical society proclaimed him the oldest living settler in the state. Heart failure was responsible for his death.   Frank B. Mackenzie was born March 2, 1857 in old Fort Snelling, now Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father worked in Minnesota, Dakota and Canada so his boyhood was spent in the Northwest. He first came to what is now North Dakota in 1865. He led an adventurous life and once in company with his father and others was taken captive by the Chippewa Indians at Fort Ransom. Two days later however, he and his companions
were released. In October 18, 1879, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Blackwell. To this union, eight children were born; four boys and four girls. His wife passed away on December 26, 1900. His second marriage was in 1915 to Miss Lily Moses of Battle Lake, Minnesota.
The deceased came to Dakota the second time in 1884 and operated a hand-fed threshing machine in this section of the state. Since 1904 he has resided continuously at Gwinner, North Dakota. He was a carpenter and builder by trade. The deceased is survived by his wife and four children as follows.
    Mrs. Ruth Cohoes of Zimmerman, MN.
    Mrs. Sarah Graves of Alexandria, S. Dakota
    Mrs. Mary Oliver of Peoria, Ill.
    Ernest Mackenzie of Milnor.
    Also, seventeen grandchildren and two brothers in Oklahoma.
Funeral services were conducted from the family home in Gwinner Wednesday afternoon with Rev. James A. Sanaker of Milnor officiating. Burial was in the Milnor Lake View cemetery.

Memorial services will be conducted by Reverend Wm. F. Tinge at 2 o'clock Sunday, October 8, at Immanuel's Lutheran church for Staff Sergeant Duane E. MacKenzie, who was fatally wounded in action in France on August 25.
The message from the government reporting his death reached his father, Ernest MacKenzie of Forman, N.D. on September 19.

Duane Mackenzie Dies.
S-Sgt, Duane Eugene Mackenzie, son of Ernest Mackenzie of Forman, passed away on August 25th as a result of wounds received while fighting for his country in France, the most honorable sacrifice anyone can make. Duane was born in Comertown, Montana, July 20th, 1925. In 1929 he went to Zimmerman, Minnesota to live with his aunt, Mrs. Ruth Cohoes, a sister of his father. He attended high school in Elk River, Minn. On October 2nd, 1943, he entered the armed forces at Fort Snelling and received his basic training at Camp Roberts, California.
On March 10th, 1944, he was united in marriage to Eileen Boehm of Princeton, Minn., and in April he left for overseas duty. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mrs. Duane Mackenzie, of Princeton, Minnesota and stepmother of Foreman, and three brothers, S-Sgt. Donald, now at Davis Monthon Field, Tucson, Arizona, Rodney of Lake Almo, Sask., Canada, and Dale of Forman. He is also survived by his two grandmothers, Mrs. M.B. Smith of Milnor and Mrs. F.B. Mackenzie of Battle Lake, Minn.
